Re: Opae ula disease?
I wonder if it might have been Ellobiopsis or Vorticella or one of the other parasites that is known to infect freshwater shrimp. Perhaps it would eventually strike opae ula kept consistently in brackish water instead of getting hit with occasional high salinities as happens in the wild. On that cha...

Re: Can Endler's livebearers live off algae and shrimp fry?
Yeah that will be the challenge. Maybe it's impossible. I won't try it unless I get information that makes it seem plausible. I am unsure that the tank would necessarily be low nutrient and low oxygen though. If I provide plenty of surface area and space the algae will give both food and oxygen. If ...

Re: ...but, brackish water plants do exist in anchialine pools
Reading today I learned that some kinds of Batophora are despised pests in reef aquariums. B. oerestedii is found in some brackish environments including a sinkhole with salinities ranging from 18 to 55 PPT in one study. 18 PPT would be close to exactly half-fresh, half-seawater aquarium mixtures. h...

Montana/Idaho lava?
I have lava rocks from Montana, Idaho, and Washington state. Anyone know any reason they would not be as good as Hawaiian lava from the opae ula's home area? Anyone have any problem with any kind of perforated lava rock releasing toxic substances or anything?

Re: Can we prevent hair algae and hydroids in the first place?
No pictures yet because no tank yet. I'm preparing to set up a tank after not having an aquarium for years. I wanna do everything right from the outset.

Can Endler's livebearers live off algae alone?
Does anyone keep Endlers with their opa ulae, living off algae alone? I want to try having just 2 Endlers in a 5 gallon tank living off hair algae and the occasional shrimp fry as much as possible, with other food provided maybe once a week. I want them to be as independent of food inputs as possibl...

Re: ...but, brackish water plants do exist in anchialine pools
Thank you, Jason. That's very interesting. Yes, the widgeon grass is found in the anchialine pools where sediment has accumulated. I don't mind putting a lot of sand and lava gravel and maybe a little kaolin down in the tank bottom unless that would somehow mess something up -- host too much bacteri...

Re: Can we prevent hair algae and hydroids in the first place?
Well not just genus Hydra per se (I think there is just one marine species isn't there?) but hydroid forms of ...whatever...that have venomous nematocysts.

Re: Discovered A New Brackish Water Plant!
Why not, do you want me to ask Bruno again? Yes, that would be great. Tell him that the mature gametophores are actually more oval than round. I can provide some pictures. Other than that they seem to be very hard to distinguish. Good work, there, Mustafa. Was this your final conclusion? What was t...

Re: Discovered A New Brackish Water Plant!
For me there is obviously those giant cells found in algae, so it's not a bladderwort (there is some marine and brackish ones, but they have plant like structure), but an algae. The spheres looks more like charophyta oospore than bladderworth plancton traps. I think the green ones are immature fema...
