Good News, doing a water change helped! Have not seen any dead shrimps.

No, it just smells like saltiness. So I think it's normal.

Re: Update- "Starting from Scratch"

What kind of scent? Chemical scent or organism scent? If it stinks, too much ammonia is a possibility. Do you have large snails in there? Do you feed them? Taking the heater out is a good idea anyways! I believe it's more of salt smell. Although, i'm not positive as I am not familiar with the scent...

Re: Update- "Starting from Scratch"

I doubt it was the temperature (unless some parts got much higher than the 81 degrees you mentioned), but either way the heater is unnecessary to have in the tank. Something is definitely wrong though, and I'd do a larger water change. 10% is not going to cut it if something in the water is toxic e...

Re: Update- "Starting from Scratch"

The tank has a lid so I don't think anything got into it but either way I wasn't cleaning or anything around the tank that particles would drop. And I just recently checked, 2 more died! :'(. I do have a heater. I decided to check the temp to make sure that it's still at 78F and it's not! It's at 81...

Re: Update- "Starting from Scratch"

Thank you, i'm very happy with it. However, just this morning 4 of my shrimps died! I have no idea why. I have not changed anything. I removed the dead shrimps (as I know you should since they release bad toxins). I got my water tested and everything seems to be normal except the hardness. The scale...

Re: My french tank

Hi Aurelien,

I love your tank especially the plant looking tree. Where did you get it? I have been wondering what name they use for them. Do you know the name of them?

Re: Starting from Scratch

Mustafa wrote: Tue Jan 15, 2019 4:18 pm No problem! They actually breed at all the above mentioned temperatures. :) The eggs and larvae develop faster at the higher temperatures though. So, again, there is no "best" temperature.
Thank you Mustafa for your input!

Re: Starting from Scratch

HI there, and welcome to the hobby! You already received a bunch of useful information and I don't really need to add to it. As for temperature, 75 is fine. So is 70, or 80 or 65 etc., in other words don't put a heater in there and just let them live at room temperature. They are very adaptable. On...

Re: Starting from Scratch

I've had great breeding results at 1.010. Make sure you keep distilled water on hand to replace any evaporation. Remember that the salt won't evaporate, so you'll only replace the lost water with distilled. I also keep some mixed water on hand if there's a need, emergent or not. It once looked a li...

Re: Starting from Scratch

I'd also buy the moss ball, it's a little pricey but I think worth the price. I was actually looking at the differences between macroalgae and mossball. In my opinion the aesthetics of the mossball is more pleasing and as I did research it also helps conditioning the water as well and is a good foo...
