Re: Two years going strong…but no babies
Hi Cuon! What substrate are you using? I saw a lot of growth on the surfaces of your tank. If you are not feeding them at all/much, where did all the growth come from? Did you feed them a lot before? The excessive growth could be nutrients leaching from your substrate or rocks.

Re: Colored lights on tanks
Hi, Carnivine! Colored lights should be fine as long as they provide a 12-hour light and 12-hour dark cycle. However, plants like algae may have trouble with photosynthesis. Just to be on the safe side, I would get normal lights. Day light LEDs or cool white or warm white are fine.

Re: Snails keep dying
Hi SuperProofer! What type of substrate are you using, and what are the yellow pieces on its surface? Also, where did you get the snail shell—was it purchased from a pet store or did you collect it yourself? If it was sold as decoration (i.e.it wasn’t specifically sold for aquarium use), it may be ...

Re: Is there such thing as too much Chaeto?
Hi Tiny Ocean! If the chaeto is healthy, it should be fine to keep, though it may compete with algae growing on surfaces for nutrients and thus potentially slow shrimp population growth. If a large amount of chaeto dies, it may pollute your water and thus have a negative impact on your shrimp. One ...

Hi Corucia! That’s fascinating! I hope they continue reproducing and maybe some day you change your mind about setting up a tank for them!

Re: My smallest Opae tank, thriving for three years
Hi Corucia! Awesome tank! Thanks for sharing! Where did you get those amphipods? Are they a marine or brackish water species? Did you notice that the amphipods compete with the shrimp for food?

Re: Total NOOB With Questions
Hi Pier777! How is your tank doing currently? Here are the answers to your two questions:
1) Macroalgae and mossballs can be added immediately to a newly set up tank, however it’s best to wait a week or two before adding snails. If you already added the snails to your newly set up tank, they should ...

Re: Improving shrimp color
Hi Dodgeylauren! Could you upload a picture of your tank? That would really help in identifying the issue, as several factors can influence shrimp coloration. Do you have snails? They can assist in keeping things balanced. For now just stop feeding the tank entirely. If the tank has been newly set ...

Re: Improving shrimp color
I found a study done on coloration in long-term captive populations of Halocaridina rubra. The study indicated that while astaxanthin is the carotenoid responsible for the red color in the species, 14 days of supplementation did not appear to make a difference in the coloration. . The study ...

Re: Food Options ... Mix and Match or stick to one?
Hi! Any food is fine as long as you do not overfeed and follow the instructions detailed on this website. I would just recommend fish food pellets, which type doesn't matter. Just feed the same pellet every 3-8 weeks. Done. These shrimp are incredibly good at utilizing nutrients so you don't need to ...
