MIXING & ADDING THE BRACKISH WATER

Post by Mary D »

Hi!
I just filled my new 5 gallon tank with the distilled water mixed with the supershrimp pre-measured salt. The box the tank came in said it was a 5 gallon tank. When I filled it to 1 inch below the top, I have an entire gallon of unused water. Should I fill the tank higher or throw the water out? I mixed it in a 3 gallon bucket, so I mixed 2 batches using about half the salt in each bucket. Does this affect the salinity in the tank now? I shouldn’t save this extra gallon of salted water to do top offs right? Just use plain distilled water? :smt006

Hi! You can either fill up the tank with the brackish water you prepared or just throw the water away. It will not affect the salinity. For top offs, just use distilled water. Great looking tank, by the way!

Thanks, John. It’s filled to 1 inch from the top, so I don’t think I should add any more. I marked the water line with a white label on the side so I’ll know when I have to add more water. I have the light on a 12 hour timer. Now I just have to wait for the algae to appear before ordering my shrimp. My little supershrimp moss ball has floated to the surface. I took the photo before I added it and the macroalgae, which looks like a tumbleweed. The waiting is the hardest part! :D
