I also think it may be a stress-related issue. I have observed this behavior in my 10-gallon shrimp-only tank--both my cherries and amanos have done this. I noticed the spasms when I performed two very large water changes two days in a row. What happened was that I removed much of the water in the t...

GunmetalBlue, Yes, that's it! This is exactly what my shrimp have...I thought it just looked like a malformed part of their body, too. They don't appear to be getting better, but as NewJohn said, only a small proportion of the shrimp are affected while the rest look healthy. It's a very nice picture...

Okay, thanks for the replies! I live in an area where there are a lot of farms, so I got the water quality report and it said that average nitrates were 17 ppm, and the highest they measured were 47 ppm *cough*. I'll go buy some spring water tonight and put that in. The report didn't list nitrite or...

Something's not right...

Hello everyone, Something seems to be wrong with some of my cherry shrimp. These shrimp have what looks like a white mass inside their tail areas. It is behind the stomach and other "guts" and runs down the inside of the tail. I don't think it is the "milky coloration" of sick sh...

Thanks YuccaPatrol! That helps a lot. My LFS has some black sand for sale, but I'm not sure if it's the fancy kind or not. I think I'll go ahead and buy the sand off the internet then, because it sounds like the moon sand is very nice and well worth it.

Changing the Substrate

Hello everyone, I have a ten gallon tank with about 40 red cherry shrimp and six amano shrimp, and I'd like to change my substrate. Right now, the substrate is standard white aquarium gravel, which of course doesn't bring out the shrimps' best coloration. I'd like to switch to black sand, and I was ...

Mustafa,
Are you going to change the scientific name for Amanos on your shrimp varieties page? Do you agree with the name change these scientists have made? Just curious :-D

If the shrimp are not eating there might be something wrong with your water. You might want to do a water change and then try again. Also, how much and how often are you feeding them? Maybe it is too much and they just can't eat it all. Hope this helps!

I think he's talking about bamboo shrimp here. I've never seen any black ones, but they seem to be quite variable in color so I wouldn't be surprised if they could turn themselves black. It might also have to do with what they are being fed or the substrate they live on. Then again, there are many u...

Light for larvae

Hi everyone, I've read that a lot of shrimp larvae need strong light 24 hours a day to survive. Does anyone know if this is true for ghost shrimp larvae? I've been leaving the light on but I wasn't sure if it was necessary since they are in such an advanced larval stage. Thanks for any advice! -Shri...

My ghost shrimp recently developed some blue on her exoskeleton within the last month. It's not white at all, just a clear shell with dark blue on it. At first I thought it was some kind of parasitic algae or mold, but the ghost is still alive and well and just gave birth to her larvae today, so I'm...

Try shining the light on the amanos again. I've done this and mine have reflective eyes you can see if you angle the flashlight correctly. It might be easier to see the ghosts' eyes because they have bigger ones. Also, my amanos seem to dislike the light more than my ghost does, so they move away an...
