I saw some mountain / rock shrimp in an LFS the other day, but instead of being an unhappy brown, or happy red with white stripe, they were black, with a slightly dull white stripe - are they rare? I am tempted to buy them because i've never seen any like it before, assuming they are still there!!
I think he's talking about bamboo shrimp here. I've never seen any black ones, but they seem to be quite variable in color so I wouldn't be surprised if they could turn themselves black. It might also have to do with what they are being fed or the substrate they live on. Then again, there are many undocumented shrimp species, so who knows?
Yes you are right, I should have said 'Asian Filter Shrimp'. They'd gone anyway when I went there, never mind! If I see anymore i'll get them and try and post a photo.

Hmmm, so they were Asian filter shrimp? Just a different color variety?
If so, thats pretty cool. The ones at my LFS are brown.

I have one or two females that have the slightest blue/green tint to them. I feed them alot of spirulina powder, and I keep them in a tank with black substrate (Eco-Complete).
I think this may be an example of how food (alot of spirulina powder) plays a role in shrimp coloration. The substrate may also be helping to bring out the blue/green tint
