I dropped a piece of rind into the backyard pond last week. I figured I'd try a small piece in another week or so, after it has time to decay a bit. If nothing else, it should support some micro-critters the shrimp will like.

Try aerating some tap water in a separate conatiner for 24 hours, then check the pH. It may be naturally acidic to begin with, treated by the water dept. to raise the pH, but unstable in the long run.
Crushed coral in the tank, or in a filter, will raise pH to around 7.6, and buffer it as well.

Thanks, now I'll know what to look for. Your pic's are great, but I didn't see a clear difference in the color of the fry. They do look quite similar to baby shrimp, but I doubt they are as graceful. The shrimp just glide smoothly through the water, while the crayfish climb or swim in short spurts.

I doubt the snails were too well fed, I think it had more to do with the abundance of copepods for the hydra to feed on. Most of those died along with the hydra, and haven't been nearly as plentiful since. There are still a few, but mainly some type of daphnia, or a related species. The cyclops seem...

My point is how would they get out of control to begin with, if the snails ate them? The nasty little crittters were all over the glass and plants. If they were only on the plants, I'd think the snails at least got them off the glass, where they would be easier prey. The snails were well-established...

Red ramshorn's eat hydra? I have brown ramshorns in my cherry shrimp tank, and the hydra were running amok. I moved out the shrimp and most of the snails, and dosed the tank with copper sulfate solution. After a thorough rinsing of the tank/plants with fresh water 24 hours later, the refugees were r...

Definitely better safe than sorry. I plan on setting up another 10 gallon for my dwarf crayfish when I see eggs, maybe sooner. Even if the cherry shrimp aren't a threat to the baby crayfish, they still outnumber them considerably, and competition for food would be in favor of the shrimp. My wife sai...

The anatomical differences are visible, but I would imagine the pheromones would be different as well. I was wondering whether it would be wise to house different species of dwarf crayfish together, more specifically Mexican and North American species? I was thinking pairs of different species may b...

I don't understand; if they look the same, how can you tell they are orange fry? Differences in size are common among any litter of just about any type of critter. I was wondering if the fry showed any color, or are colorless like shrimp fry when small. My Female carried her first eggs at 6 months. ...

More eggs, sweet.. :smt038 :smt023 I take it the first ones have grown a bit? Other than the size, do the orange ones look much different than the rest? My new trio are only 1", the male just a bit smaller than the females. Any idea what size they are sexually mature? I read somewhere they will...

Completely white are usually albino's, they lack any pigmentation. Snowball shrimp are a good example. This one looks like a cherry shrimp with a snowball tail. If/when I see it again, I'll try to catch and isolate it for a pic.

White-tail cherry shrimp?

The last couple of days, I have seen one half-grown specimen that has a white tail. The front half of the body is normally pigmented, not solid red yet, still a young one. My first thought was an incomplete molt, but after seeing the same thing a couple days later (assuming it IS the same shrimp), i...

I'm new to crayfish myself, the only concern I am aware of (aside from water quality) is the young being cannibalistic. A friend had a brood of "blue lobsters" (I'm not even sure of the genus/species) about a year ago. The babies were placed in a tank full of java moss, and most were eaten...
