Re: First Tank
Sorry that I cannot answer your question about females producing eggs. If these were freshwater shrimp the answer would be yes but for these? I showed similar pictures to one of Dr. Santos' research students and he said the dark area was part of their digestive system. Their ovaries are more in the ...

Re: A novice with more questions
There has been a brief discussion of late about these products. I would avoid it. Start your tank as this site recommends. Once that tank and shrimp are flourishing experiment on a new tank. Setting up your tank is like getting a recipe for wonderful dish from Aunt Tilly. Instead of following her di...

Re: Thoughts on Nerite Snails
Ace I realize you like the quick cycle products but that is not the recommended method of this site. Also promoting it to new shrimpers may not be best. I would suggest you put a disclaimer when promoting it such as this is my method not the sites recommended method. Better yet why not start a new p...

Re: Sea water
I can't see a real problem using 50/50 ocean water and distilled water. I am from NJ and I wouldn't. Our ocean water isn't the crystal clear Caribbean water and it would take me 40 minutes to get to the ocean. A ten minute drive to the local big box fish store and a few dollars for a small box of 'o...

Re: My tank setup
Nice tank. Big fan of spheres. No need to provide hiding places. It just provides hiding places. Many people have plain tanks. No substrate no decorations. The shrimp thrive. Just decorate as you please. Hint. Too much decorations and you won't see the shrimp.

Re: First Tank
Don't feed the shrimp. Wait a another month or two. I am sure the snails will make a difference. If you feel the need just clean the front of the tank.
For the nonmoving snails turn them on their sides. If they are alive they should turn themselves.

Re: First Tank
Skittymars I am a fan of nerites. One or two in your tank will do an amazing job. They have few drawbacks. They are voracious earters at least as compared to the shrimp. Put too many in a tank and they eat all the biofilm. Two they don't reproduce. So you will need to buy more every few years. They ...

Not to hijack Ace's post but cakelake I believe your substrate is too deep. A half inch should be fine.
Ace those are nice crystals. They would add to the tank but wouldn't they degrade over time. Green or pink would be very interesting.

Ace I do like your sphere and I have a sphere enclosure I have not started. Something about the shape of a sphere is intriguing. Glad you posted. I am not sure exactly what you are looking for. Greater variety of plants suitable for H rubra? I hope you find them. The Marimo balls I believe are quest...

Re: And now the wait!
Nice to have you with us. I checked my tanks which are cycled and I do not notice an odor. I would not rush and buy shrimp and wait till March. If the odor is due to cycling it will pass. Wipe the ring with your finger. Use an old credit card to scrape harder buildup. If your tank is plastic just us...

No water changes.
Just enough to satisfy you. I use variable LED light.
Ken.
Nice to have you here. Good luck!

Not sure where you read that the algae is a brackish species. They seem to be from fresh water lakes. They may survive for a time in brackish water but surviving for a time is not thriving. Mustafa has been involved with fresh water dwarf shrimp for many years as well as H rubra. He has indicated th...

Re: New Tank, Some Questions
Adding my two cents. 1. I do not believe the type of light is that important. Duration and intensity is the issue. If you feel there is too much algae growth just keep the light on for an hour or so in the morning and several hours after work till bedtime. If you want to use LED light get a light th...

I would stick to your current feeding schedule. Trying to rush breeding by more feeding could cause problems. Please be patient.
