Fittings. Nylon, brass, polyethylene etc.

Common sense dictates that brass fittings are probably not ideal for an invert tank. Plastics are generally rather inert, and therefore a better choice. For several months now, I have been checking all the local hardware stores every couple weeks for some really simple plastic fittings. They all car...

Red cherries turning blue

Hello, I've received ghost shrimp on occasion that have a fairly strong blue tinge to them, but this tends to fade back to clear after a few months. I've also heard of a lot of wild caught dwarf shrimp that are naturally blue. Most people seem to agree that this is likely something from their diet i...

Re: brown leaves for shrimp

Back to those leaves in the snow for a second. A lot of organisms can survive sub-zero temps, they just go into stasis or something. Also, some of the more complex little creatures lay eggs that will lay dormant until conditions are more favourable. Can somebody let us know what forms of life might ...

I've noticed that whenever I drink more than a glass or two of tap water per day I get a sore throat. I've always assumed it's from chlorine, but wasn't terribly concerned about it. It can't be good for you though... I'm setting up a three stage filter for my tank water anyway, so I'll be switching ...

Adults tend to be more sensitive than babies actually. What did you mean by bad weather? Weather does not really have anything to do with water chemistry; what kinds of water problems are you experiencing?

It's surprising to see any ammonia or nitrates at all in an established tank. How long have the snails and guppies been living in that 29G?

H Rubra have been bred in a moderately wide variety of conditions; though I've never heard of anybody being successful with them in straight fresh water. There is a big difference between "survive" and "thrive" and I'm sure you want to provide the best environment for your pets t...

I've seen a couple of my shrimp molt, but that video was still really interesting; you can really see how soft they are when they first come out. Thanks for posting that!

I'll have to be careful to keep them confined to the single tank. Do they lay their eggs or carry them until the babies hatch?

I don't even use the abbreviation, I just call them cherries. It's only a few extra letters.

I can imagine them being hard to get rid of, but the tank they're in is only ten gallons and I'm not really worried about them getting out of control.

Well, he outlasted me  after their lights went off I went to bed :) The male will stay with the female for days, at least until he's sure she's berried. Very interesting critters, even if they are ugly. Wow, that's interesting, they could have easily been together for much longer than the few ...
