Pet stores lack of variety

Post by fishbreed »

I have noticed in my area Wisconsin, that the pet shops really do not have much variety at all. We have about 5 local pet shops, 3 mom and pops and 2 big box variety. only one has any kind of shrimp and that is Walmart and it is the ghost shrimp. none have asian claims. they seem to have a couple of crayfish, i seen the blue ones going for $30 here sometimes, nuts!!!. They might have one color of Apple snail, but they look more like reject colors then anything.

If you want variety, patronize THIS petstore. Visit the PetShrimp Store.

The other way is just to ask the store owner to get you something. They often will go out of the way to help you. A good relationship with your LFS will also give you a profitable outlet for your shrimp once you get overloaded. I ended up with 20 extra Rosenberii I needed to find homes for and the LFS was happy to take them off my hands and pay me well for them.

My lfs has only stocked amano and ghost shrimp for years so I brought up the different types of shrimp you can get to the owner. He wasn't aware of any other type of shrimp (they mainly do fish) and looked through his order book with me and found them....said he wasn't sure about ordering them in case he doesn't make a profit.

He decided to go for it after all and now I have a tiger shrimp and four cherrys & cherry babies. :D

yea my local pet store guys said the same thing. they seem to be affraid to try anything new. like yea red cherry shrimps wont sale lol. i seen them selling for around $5, when u can even find them. maybe thats why no pet shops seem to carry asian claims or shrimps or anything new. scared they wont make a buck.

I've had the same problem in my area. However, there actually are plenty of pet stores, they just all have the same stuff. There is one local chain of "Big Box" store in the area that actually has a decent aquarium section with live plants and shrimp/crabs/crayfish. They sell amano shrimp for $2 a piece which i think is pretty generous.

I went online recently to find something more interesting. I found a massive aquarium store that i never knew existed but was nearby. It was a mom & pop type place that really knew what they were doing. I found bumblebee and cherry shrimp there as well as amanos and bamboo shrimp. I was pretty psyched till i looked at the price tag. They were selling amanos for $4, bumblebees for $5, and cherries for $6. The latter prices aren't that unreasonable but $4 for an amano shrimp is ridiculous.

lol. $4 for amanos what a bargin!!!!!!!! eahhaehae, i guess it all depends were you live. im to lazy to put my baby amanos in the salt water, plus i have no clue about salt water either. but hey if they sale them for $4 and you sell them to them for $2 thats pretty decent. my water here in Wisconsin is hard!!! so i dont think bubblebees would breed here. i guess ill just wait till someone has a fire sale of cherrys and pick up a few to breed :) and hopefully learn the basics of salt water and raising amanos in them :)

Where in Wisconsin do you live? I know of a bunch of stores in Madison that have shrimp for sale...

And dwarf shrimp do not seem to sell at the store where I work, well exept for cherries, because they are so small and people like BIG things. Also most people have too large/agressive fish in their tanks.
