hi all i just found this site and think it is great
iam going to get some shrimp for a small(1g)planted tank i set up but have some questions, i was going to get tiger or cherrie shrimp but how well would these do in water with a PH of 7.5 or so and temps from 71-78?(sence the tank is small i cant realy put a heater in it)how many could i keep in a 1g?(iam hopeing they will breed)and anything else that i might have missed
ok i read true the site and from what i read cherrys should be happy and breed well at my PH level but i couldent find how well they handel temp changes sence it will change thrueout the day/night by about 5 degrees?also coudent find anything on how many can be kept in my size tank or dos it just depand on maintence factors ect?
1 gallon to too small to safely grow red cherry shrimp. Get a 10 gallon tank with a heater and be sure it is cycled properly before adding the shrimp or they will all die.
With proper flow and filtration and a heater you can eliminate the fluctuations in temperature. Cherry shrimp can handle cold down to the 40's and warm temps up to the mid 80's but best in the 70-80 degree range. I don't think a day/night fluctuation would be bad, but in a 1 gallon tank it may be fast enough to stress the shrimp. Water quality issues happen really fast in a 1 gallon tanks, so it really is not advised.
well i may just set a 20g then to try and beed them, but this tank is for a specific spot so i would like to put something in it is there anyware in canda i can get those hawaiian shrimp?(or some ware that ships)
What does cycle mean???? cycle the water like I said I am new at this and I dont want to kill them off when I get them, if you could send me personal email one of you SHRIMPMASTERS telling me about this I think I pretty much get the rest, and can use this fourm to discuss my problems and or needs....
TY
I see you are frustrated, but keep your cool and be polite. We will try to help if we can, but people who succeed in raising shrimp are ones who can do a little research and apply it. Tank cycling is covered many times in this forum and you can find it by googling as well.
Cycling means to run the tanks with some bio load for a few weeks to establish the correct bacteria to break down the waste products. If you don't do this you will get amonia spikes that will kill the shrimp.
I generally put in a bunch of snails and keep them fed for a couple of weeks before I put in shrimp. Once you have a tank established you canuse gravel from the old tank or the filter media to kick start the new tank.
Seach out "fishless cycle" also Many people swear by it.
