I'm new here! Unfortunately I just lost my ghost shrimp and am wondering what could've happened to him.
I got back from College and found him on the glass top outside de tank, I put him back in the tank but he kept jumping out of it. After putting him back in for the second time, I saw he was laying down on the bottom of the tank and the fish started to pick on him, so I removed him and put him in a little bowl with some tank water, but he ended up dying
I immediately tested my water and everything was fine (ammonia and nitrites 0, pH 7)
What could've happened? Why was he commiting suicide? He was with me for almost 2 years...
2 years is about all the longer these guys live, so you did really well with him. Shrimp leave the tank when they are stressed. It could be some water parameter you didn't test for, more agressive fish (as they get bigger) or the shrimp may just have been dying of old age and needed more privacy than he was finding in your tank.
Be sure there are places to hide in the tank and be sure your fish are not agressive. Ghost shrimp are great as they are really interesting and really inexpensive. Where else can you get that much enjoyment for 10 cents each?
Yeah, I've added lots of plants, but maybe it wasn't enough for him He was the only one (out of 10) who survived my puffers in 2004, then my goldfish, and at last my tiger barbs (who actually never cared about the shrimp).
Do a little research on gentle tank mates for shrimp. I've found Endler's Livebearers to be good as well as most plecos and ottos, Siamese Algae eaters, and little else. Realize that ghost shrimp are also known as feeders. This is not without a reason. Most fish would love to have a go at them.
Yes, I know, actually I bought them for my puffers, but the puffers died and the shrimps were still there. So, I moved them to my goldfish tank, Some got eaten, then I got attached to them, but my only option was to put them in the tropical tank, which worked fine although I had tiger barbs, but like I said, they couldn't care less. But this little guy was the only survival and was in the tank with the barbs for 1 year and a half. I've recently upgraded my tank, hoping that everybody would have more space to swim and therefore be happier, but today I lost Mr. Shrimp.
Anyways, thanks for your time. I dont think I'm getting any other shrimp soon (or even fish!), but I decide to do so, I'll make sure to do a research on what's better for them.
