ceremic rings as substrate

Post by shrimping »

Has anyone ever tried having a thick layer of ceremic rings as substrate in a shrimp and moss tank? Will shrimps get lost inside?

They are meant as biological media for filters.

Shrimping means this:

I don't see why they can't be used as a substrate. The only problem I see with those is that they would accumulate too much waste if the substrate is too deep. I would just sprinkle a few on the bare ground to barely cover it if I were really set on using these rings.

Thanks Mustafa, those were exactly what I was referring to.

If I use them as a substrate about 5 layers deep, is it possible for shrimps to go deep inside and never be able to find their way out again? Or do they have a natural ability to find their way out when they want to?

(I'm not worried about the waste as I think they can be siphoned out easily unlike a compact gravel/sand substrate.)

I don't think there would be a problem. The shrimp will probably just follow the light out.

The only problem with that is that you will be siphoning out a lot of baby shrimp with the waste. That will happen even if you are really careful as baby shrimp have a habit of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
