White saddle

Post by Beansly »

I have just received some cherry shrimp off of aquabid, and they seem to be healthy and active. One of them seems to have a white "saddle", like something is in there. Could this be eggs, like in the snowball shrimp, or is it a parasite possibly? I've never had cherries before.

You will find out soon,if you feed the shrimp well they will mate and you will see burried females carrying eggs. I don't think the color of the saddles is as important as presence of saddles. By the way, how many cherry shrimp did you get (female/male)?

The auction was for 10 shrimp with 1 pregnant female. I got about 12/13 shrimp, mostly juveniles (so I can't tell with my untrained eye the sex), but I can tell from the 3 or 4 older ones that at least 2 are females with eggs. I'm just paranoid about the white saddle from the other post about the worm in the ghost shrimp (nasty). The shrimp are really neat, though!

Shrimp get stressed from shipment and lose color. Keep them happy, lots of water changes (30-50% each week) and don't over feed. A tiny pinch every other day is plenty for 15 shrimp. More food will kill them due to water quality issues. As the population builds you can feed more.

I've never seen worms in cherries.

I have to agree with badfalsh. There has not been a reported case of worms in cherries and the horseworms seem to be specific to the ghost shrimp. Please let your shrimp get used to there new home and update us on the results :)

Oh, Gregor, I wasn't blaming you. I'm sure everybody's better off for knowing, right? At least I hope so. I really didn't mean to upset anybody by posting those worms.

I agree that the more you know in this hobby the better. Even though I would not want any of my shrimps going though having worms! Thanks for sharing the info

I feel better about the worm question now, anyway. I'm just paranoid, I've kept aquariums for 15+ years, and been pretty successful, but heck if I know that much about shrimp except from what I've read here! They've all colored up a lot since yesterday, and seem to have settled down, crawling around on the sponge filter, feeding (which looks hilarious, like their first couple of "feet" are furiously running in place, or playing bongos, one of the two). I also must have gotten a baby, since there is a tiny little one on the filter. Awesome!
