Red Cherry sex ID please :-)

Post by Dusko »

Hi all :) ,
I would like you to confirm something for me, please. I am 99% sure that the pale shrimp on photo 1 and 2 is a male Red Cherry. What do you think?
I am asking because just few weeks ago I thought that I have 5 males (they where small and pale) Now out of 9 shrimps 8 has white saddles and are becoming more and more red, leaving me with this ONE male.
A few of my shrimps had eggs but lost them after a day. Is it possible that this male is not mature yet, or they can feel this set-up of mine is very new (not enough of food like microorganisms etc.)?
The third photo is how all my females look, more or less.
So, is this guy a guy or did I end up with buying all females? :?
BTW this pale shrimp does look like the male one in Mustafa's shrimp varieties http://www.petshrimp.com/redcherryshrimp.html
My females seem to have deeper abdomen for storing the eggs, than this pale one. This is another reason for me being sure this one is male...it has to be one

Yes, that pale shrimp is a male. Although scale is hard to judge, he does look as if he is mature.

Often, females will drop their first eggs but will be successful on their second try. You'll have zillions of babies soon enough!

YuccaPatrol...your words are music :D oh man I was concerned something else could be the problem. GOOD.

I mean there is lots of microorganisms and algae just on the glass (not to mention the rest) have a look.
This worm is approx. 2mm , so this photo shows approx. 4 square mm of aquarium glass, and there is lots of square mm in a 11 gallon, don't you think (lots of food for 9 Cherry's). Even I would be totally stuffed with all that food

Thanks again.

Looks like a male, but could still turn out to be a female if the animal is still very young. Also, I can't really see any red on the shrimp in the picture. Is the shrimp more brownish than red? If so, it could be a wild-type Neocaridina "contaminent" that came with the shipment of red cherries. Happens all the time with imported red cherries.

I have never seen a red cherry shrimp with white saddle. Do you have a photo?

Sorry, my mistake. The saddle is yellow-orangeish. Not white.

And yes Mustafa it might be the wild-type male. I was observing and it does appear more brownish.

Regards, Dusko.
