The trouble is with products that artificially raise or lower the PH is water changes. Even a seemingly small shift in PH can stress out the tank inhabitants.

I'm new to shrimp, but vet for fish. The best advice I ever got from my LFS (REAL good guys) was "don't fight your water." Your low Ph isn't too bad, but those drops can lead to a big crash with soft, acidic water. Buffer your water with gravel, etc. but I would recommend staying away from additives.

Additives are, in my opinion, just like the Crocodile Hunter...you HAVE to win 100% of the time. If they (in your case a bad dosing) win just once...disaster.

Also, copper pipes aren't as bad as the galvanized pipes (even when old). With your shrimp, it could have been any number of factors - the change in Ph, old age, heart attack, anything. Honestly, I WISH I had copper pipes...after seeing some the the galvanized steel pipes that had corroded in my house, I was tempted to never drink water again!
