Creepy Crawlies in the X-mas Moss! :-o

Post by Acsuth »

I just received a large amount of Christmas moss -- it has expanded to fill a 10-gallon tank lol And it's definately the real deal! It's coarser, darker color and the fronds are larger than java moss...it smells kind of piney fresh too...however...I also got a big load of crustacean thingies in with it....I only dip rinsed it, my bad. They look similar to "rolly polys" -- but are definately aquatic creatures...I'm going to start searching for photos on what they might be...I do hope they aren't anything that's going to hurt my shrimp or snails.

I love the moss though!! It's neater than I thought it would be!! :D

Amanda,

I also got some of the same critters with some xmas moss I got as a gift from a guy I bought some java moss from and yes, they look like "rolly pollys"... :-D

I only had a few and I was never able to find what kind of creatures they were. They disappeared after I located the moss in the bigger 10g tank; I only saw them in the quarantine tank. Hope you have better luck on your search.

Keep us posted!

Thos are most likely "Scuds" (either Gammarus or Hyallela species). We just had a thread about them. They won't harm anything.

Where/Who did you get your X-mas moss from? I might order some myself (one reason being that I want to see what those crustaceans really are). If you got it from aquabid, what's the seller's name?

this stuff looks a lot like the photo from that first link -- the one entitled "X-mas moss wall" or such.

I have a few like that...but look down at that things leg in your photo -- there is a tiny rolly poly like critter -- just imagine that thing larger than the scud with black horizontal stripes and you'll know what's the most abundant in the X-mas moss I got.

I probably could look this up but being lazy, do you have any idea what kind of light (lots of, medium, does okay in minimum light) Christmas moss needs to stay green and lush?

I always heard "Medium light" was the best for X-mas moss -- but Eddie the guy I traded mine for said it does pretty good in any light. Says he bought a whole shipment from a LFS four years ago and now he has mass quantities of it!! lol He's really friendly -- I'll bet he'd be willing to trade for other stuff too. He said to give out his e-mail(no spamming though, ok? LOL): kool_ed84@hotmail.com
