Need Help To ID

Post by Newjohn »

Hello
I just picked these up in a trade.
The Shrimp were bought in Chicago last November.
They were labeled as Rainbow Shrimp.

The Females Have alot of small eggs.
The Young are raised in hard water.
The Younger ones have almost clear eyes.
The Saddles have a Whitish color.

I do not think, they look like the Indian Dwarf Shrimp.
That are pictured in the Varieties Page.

Any help will be appreciated

Its a little hard to tell in the pics, are they filter feeding or do they have claws?

Could be a dwarf filter shrimp....

I am no expert or have the experience that some others have here, but to my amatuer eyes, it looks like a RCS sans red.

Hi AnneRiceBowl

There are a few differances.

The Eggs are very small and alot of them.

There eyes are clear, with a small black dot.

The Saddle's have a White tint .

That is just a few.

Thank You

How many babies do you get in a hatching? Are the babies similar to RCS babies? I am currious as you mentioned the size and number of eggs.

Neoshrimp

I just recently pick these Shrimp Up in a trade.

I, myself have had no offspring.

I hope , in the next week or two. To be able to report back with that information.

The person I got them from, had a few young ones in the tank.
They did not seem to reproduce like the RCS.

I will try and keep updating.

I just wanted to get a positive ID on them. Or a close Quess

You really don't want to take wild guesses if you don't know. Dwarf filter shrimp is really a wild guess.

Newjohn,

It does look like some of the shrimp I've seen (and kept/bred) from India. I have no idea what exact species it is though...

Either way, get it established in your tanks and share the wealth. :) Every new species is a win for the hobby.

I am still having a Hard time telling the difference between Caridina and Neocaridina.
Except for the Caridina "Green".

So if these might be from India, Then They would be Caridina Species ?

Sorry...I thought I saw a "filter fan" in one of the pics...I should have asked more questions and done some research before making a guess like that.

Neocaridina are restricted to east asia, so anything from India is not going to be a Neocaridina. So, yes, these are most likely a Caridina of some sort, unless some scientist just came up with another species name for indian dwarf atyid shrimp that I am not aware of. :-D
