A Note To Fellow Newbies On This Forum

This morning I started to post a new topic asking wether or not the RCS gave birth to live young or laid their eggs in the tank. Before I did that though, I tried a forum search on the topic "Live Birth". Wow! Not only did I find a post directly answering my question, but I ended up spending a long time reading a ton of related posts and learned quite a bit. The search engine here is really effective and serves as an index into a virtual encyclopedia of good info.

I'm glad you found the search option to be helpful. It's a great way of learning so much more about the shrimp we keep.

Sometimes when I do a search I find great topics with fab info from members and spend a lot of time reading and drooling over wonderful photos.

Yes, there is a ton of good info here. The downside if that you can't be in a hurry as you are sure to get side tracked with neat stuff.

You'll find as you advance in the hobby that stuff you had no interest in before suddenly becomes important. Use the search & there you are!

Yes, the search function here is great, especially because this forum does not have a lot of the mindless chit chat you'll find elsewhere.

The best thing a new person can do is spend several evenings reading anything and everything here.

When I first found this Site, I started reading through the threads in the Forum.
I spent over 2 weeks, Just reading what I was interested in.
I had to get a note book, to write down all of the information.
I still use the notes, and add to them , when new information is posted.

I still have to use the Search, to find more information on other Species, that I am now interested in.

I look forward to reading more of your posts

I also found the search feature very useful when I first joined. I still find it useful, whenever I have a question, I always search before I ask, like it says in the forum rules

You're welcome. I am glad the website is fulfilling its purpose. Keep in mind that we are *all* contributing to and growing the hobby in the english-speaking world. All of our experiences contribute to this comprehensive database. It's only been about 2 1/2 years since this website has been online and we have already come a very loooong way in the hobby. Where there were myths, misinformation, guesses, half-truths and plain lack of any useful information just 2 1/2 years ago, now we have concrete information about these wonderful animals. A separate shrimp keeping hobby has developed. Shrimp are no longer seen as just stange/excotic additions to communty tanks and planted tanks. The concept of a dedicated "shrimp tank" developed right here on this website (at least in the english-speaking world). There is still a long way to go, but we have already accomplished a lot. It's always exciting to be right at the beginning of a brand new hobby.

And yes, the search function is extremely helpful when looking for specific information. That's why I made it one of the rules to search first before asking questions. In the end it really benefits everyone, even though it's quite a bit of work for the searcher in the beginning. But as the old saying goes...no pain, no gain.

When I found the site I went back and shift-clicked on every thread I wanted to read and just kept going back to threads over a year old. When I was done I had like 200 windows open to go through for the rest of the day. It was definately a good learning experience to see people's first posts and then ask the same questions I had, then get to the point they are expanding their operation.

This hobby is evolving fast, so don't take old posts as gospel. Before doing something serious, add to the old post and ask about it. This will show that you've done your homework and will get a positive response vs. a scolding.

A good example of this is our lesson on oak leaves and najas & plants in general. Early posts were big on plants, and now we are backing away from that. We may yet find that there are still some "good plants" but for now we know to keep it sparse with lots of leaf litter.

Yeah, I remember when I first became obsessed with aquariums, and began begging my parents to let me get an aquarium, which was around 7 years ago, I think. I knew hardly anything about fish, and still less about shrimp. Like Mustafa said, they seemed very strange, although I always liked them. Actually, I just realized. The "My first shrimp tank journal" should be called "My second shrimp tank journal". About 6 years ago, I set up a 6 gallon tank and put nothing but 6 ghost shrimps in it. It was a lot of fun while it was up and running, although I was such a novice at that point, I can think of quite a few reasons why they all died...

If only I knew then what I know now...

Hey, at least I know that I was one of the few people who ever set up a shrimp tank, before this website came into existance.

I know what you mean Ghost shrimp were my first shrimp also and I liked them back then because of their size and the way that they looked. The hobby has come a long way since then

I remember when the only time I brought ghost shrimp home was to feed my fish. Now I feed some fish to my shrimp.
