Tail Hangers

Post by Newjohn »

Hello
I traded a few RCS, for what were called Rainbow Shrimp.

One of the Females is a transparent Orange, and the other Female is just clear, like the Snowballs.

The problem I have, Is that I now have several Tail Hangers floating around my tank.
They seem to float, but, they can also stop, and move on there own.

If they are different species, I need to take the Female out , that is producing the Tail Hangers. and put her in another tank.

The Tail Hangers, make it very difficult to do water changes.

Here are a couple pictures, I posted them in a different Thread.

After looking at the pictures, they both look like they both carry, A large number of smaller eggs.

Can anyone help with a Species Name ?

Sorry can't help with a name, but it does look very similar to this one that came in with my Indian zebra's. Does yours have the white stripe down the back?

Part of another assortment perhaps.

The Orange one, has a orangish stripe on it back.
The Clear one, likes to hide alot and I rarely see her.

One thing I forgot to mention about these Shrimp. They are the fasting swimming Shrimp I have see.
They will swim the entire length of my 125 gal in a straight line.
All of my other Shrimp, will kind of bounce around the tank.

JK
Did you just get one of the red/orange Shrimp in with the Zebra's ?

Yes there were actually two red/orange ones, but the other is a white banded one.

My one is also very active, particularly late in the day.

There are by-catches of various shrimp with small eggs that hail from India. I've had a few of them myself. I have no idea what they exactly they are. India is one of the hotspots of shrimp diversity, so who knows what they might be. As far as I know there are over 100 species of Caridina to choose from and probably many more undiscovered.

Yes, and that's only in India. China is another hotspot with many, many more species...again many undescribed ones among them. Then there is southeast asia, New Guinea and Australia. If we actually get our hands on *all* of these species, you might need a few hundred tanks at least to keep and breed them all. :-D

I believe there are enough members here in this Forum
that would keep at least a couple of the species.

Than we could pass the Shrimp and information around.

First we have to get them into this country Alive.

Mustafa
From the pictures I posted,
Do the Orange and clear Shrimp look to be the same species ?
1 difference is that the Clear has 4 white markings "Dots" on her tail and the Orange one does not.

They do not stay still long enough, for me to study them.

Yes, that's the idea. :)

Hard to tell. It looks like the white shrimp has a much shorter and differently shaped rostrum. The body looks slightly different, too. I bet it's a different species.

Actually, I don't know of any regularly traded shrimp that has not made it to the US yet at one point or another. The problem is that that they arrive dead and half-dead. The best long term solution will be personal collection trips.

Yep, i'd be willing to keep a few(hundred) :-D

As for shrimp in China...I do have at least 2 friends living in China currently...I don't know that a shrimp could make it from China to my house alive, without lots of speacial equipment etc. I'll at least check it out.

Which Travel Agent do you use.
Maybe we can get a group discount. :D

Maybe in the near furture, we could have a Forum collection Trip.

:smt045 That would be awsome...!

Who needs a vacation, we could all go shrimp collecting! It'd be cool to go risking life and limb through some foreign jungle, in search of shrimp. Of course i'd be looking for puffers too :P
