Another question about shrimp disease & deaths

Post by wendyjo »

Do shrimp generally succumb to bacterial disease that fish often suffer from? I am asking because my shrimp are dying (see my other post(s) on the subject) and if I do lose them all then I will probably wait until after the New Year to get more. I am hoping to get a large community tank for Christmas, which will free up my 5g betta tank for the shrimp - still might not be the ideal size but I can't go any larger than that - I just don't have the space in my house.

Anyhow, I was wondering if it would be safe to put a betta in the current shrimp tank in the event that all the shrimp die on me. I don't know why they're dying (water parameters are fine), but I'd hate to have a cycled tank go to waste if it would be possible to put a fish in it. Any thoughts? Anyone know if shrimp and fish share the same ailments?

From what I have read and heard on the forum, they typically do not share the same ailments. for example, shrimp do not get Ick or the bacterial infections. This doe snot mean they are not carriers as the research has not been carried out as far as I know. However, fish and shrimp are both effected by environmental conditions such as poor water conditions and poor temperature control.

Maybe someone with personal experience or more information could add to this.

I have not heard or read of diseases that affect both fish and shrimp yet.
