Are you planning on growing plants/edible algae for the shrimp? If so, this would probably work better for lighting than a desk lamp. If not; please ignore :D

You can get flourescent plant lights that come with a plastic fixture at a home improvement store. If you lay one across the top of the tank (preferably using a transparent top of some sort), this makes a very nice light for growing plants/beneficial algae. It is kinda expensive, but not aquarium-hood expensive.

Hope that helps!

I wasn't planning on any plants, and no matter where I put the thing, it'll get sunshine part of the day (whoever designed this house did not have aquariums in mind) so algae whould take care of itself. I'll keep that in mind though. It's looking like I might be able to by a tank and hood cheap from a friend of mine however, so let's keep our fingers crossed and maybe I won't have to cobble together my own lighting.

It's always nice to have friends that can help us out :-) Please let us know how it works out and post a picture or two when you have it set up!

The ironic thing is, the reason I might be able to buy it from her is all her fish died of new tank syndrome... I offered to help her get it going again, but hey, I like having tanks. :-D Of course pictures, and frequent updates... that way you all can tell me if I'm about to do something stupid.
