I have answered this question a few times here before. I think others took a shot at it a few times, too. Try searching. The color traits in bee shrimp and crystal reds follow simple mendelian rules.

The substrate looks like "ADA Aquasoil Amazonia." Lots of people in Asia (and now here) seem to use that for their crystal reds, although I am not sure how appropriate it is for the long term. I've never tested it, so I can't say anything about it.

Good question. Let's hear what aquafever's experiences are. From what I hear their offspring are mostly or to a large degree non-hinomaru and that's why their price is still very high in Japan. I might be wrong though since I am not speaking from first hand experience (I don't have hinomaru crystal reds).
