Shrimp Food

Just wish to share with you what new items I saw yesterday. There are three new kinds of shrimp food (made in Taiwan):

(1) Colour enhancer
(2) Egg enhancer
(3) Size enhancer (the shop keeper said that it could make babies grow faster and bigger)

Oh, I didn't buy any because they're all too big. I think one bottle is enough for many years. I only have about ten tiny shrimps.

Yes, that is too much But I wish we had this type of food here to help our shrimp grow bigger, look better and be healthier. That sounds a little bit like a sales pitch at a gym

If it really works than it would be cool. But if it does work I'm sure there must be some long-term effects (Sort of like steroids on humans). I hope that is not the case though Thanks for sharing

sounds like snake oil to me. I have found over several years that feeding well with many types of food, adding iodide monthly to help with molting and mantaining good water quality my shrimp do very well and develope a nice size.

Hi rugie, have you found this way of feeding your shrimp lengthens the lifespan of your shrimp compared to the 1-1.5 years average for dwarf shrimp?

I have not made that determination, I raise my shrimp for 3 reasons, I am retired and they give me something to do that I like, I do not have a display tank, they are in 20 gal long tanks with hundreds of occupants. my shrimp, crays, supplement my income, they give me great pleasure. in my lifetime I have seen many products come along, many were bogus. I would love to see a mfgr give samples to a group of people (like us and that wonder food) to try, and then report back on it's merits or lack of same.

I wouldn't pay any more for specialized shrimp food than I currently pay for the basic high quality fish formulations that I feed my shrimp.

Because most shrimp/crayfish are opportunistic detrivores and scavengers, they will eat most anything and high protein formulated foods are MUCH more nutritious than most natural foods they would eat in the wild.

I feed a simple mix of quality flake, pellets, algae wafers (that actually have lots of algae in them), and freeze dried or frozen whole foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.

Yucca, how often do you feed your shrimp? I feed mine daily but in small portions on a rotated schedule (different food each day).

I feed them most every day but I also skip days too and probably end up feeding them 4-5 times a week. Like you, very small portions and I offer different foods each time.

How small of a portion (let's say of algae wafers) should I give 12 or so shrimp? One wafer daily?

I'd say no more than 1/8 of a wafer for just 12 shrimp. Try to figure out how much they can eat in an hour or two. If they don't finish that, decrease the amount next time.
