I Discovered Wild Shrimps !

Post by beckypyyeung »

Hey, I went to Shing Mun Reservoir in Hong Kong yesterday and discovered wild tiny shrimps (1 cm in length) in a super tiny pool :smt026

The pool was by the hill under some trees. The most surprising thing is that the pool is just around 8 inches by 8 inches, around 3 to 4 inches deep. There is just a little water inside. Stream water drips down through the hill. So the water is changed a little bit all the time.

There are about ten of them. Initially I thought they're amano, but a 100% reliable expert said they're absolutely not. Yes, they can't go out anywhere and they can't complete their lavare stage there.

It's a wonderful experience, but I'm still wondering where they come from and if the tiny pool will dry up one day. The pool is so small, the water just comes down drop by drop and again drains away drop by drop . The origin of them really puzzles me. They can't be something fallen from the sky.

They were probably washed down when there was a heavy rain. Any streams up above?

Another possibility is that maybe they're adapted to living in vernal pools, the kind that quickly appear and disappear like you described.

Very cool find! Super exciting.

Hi everybody,

I couldn't see any stream there because the hill was too vertical and tall. I could only see water dripping down drop by drop from above. Yes, I guess it's possible that they were washed down during heavy rain.

OK, no problem. Let me go there again and take a digital photo. However, last time I tried to send my crystal red photos to show you all but unsuccessful :?

You need to upload your pictures to another website first, then link them to your post in this forum. Try out http://photobucket.com , it's the free photo hosting site that I use. After you create an account and upload some pictures, just left-click on the IMG Code below the pic you want to show, then right-click/paste the link on the forum page. It's easier if you have both pages open at the same time (in different windows).

Or take it on faith you were successful as a nice feature of PhotoBucket is that it displays a "copied"message, then paste into your post and hit "preview post." Then, submit if your photo appears.
