Ghost shrimp disease?

Post by marusempai »

The question mark being because I'm not sure if they are sick, or if I'm seeing normal variations... anyway, I got a few more from the LFS because my population has been dwindling (the filter broke while I was sick, and my husband didn't notice...). One has a redish patch on its side, near the swimmers, that looks rather like a healing injury, but I'm terrified it's some sort of mite. There is some whitish tissure around it, and it looks rather like a scab to me. The other has what I would swear is a saddle, except it's sort of a powder green color. Both are otherwise healthy looking and active, and the other shrimp from this batch look fine... I'm probably paranoid, but I've isolated the "sick" ones just in case, as I'm rather overly fond of the ones that grew up in my tank and don't want them to be infected.

Well, the shrimp with the spot died. Green stuff shrimp still seems normal, except for the green stuff, though. Wait and see, I suppose.

So the green stuff just got WAY creepier. I was checking out the shrimp in the main tank, and noticed that one of them has the green stuff too, except it was PULSATING. Does anybody know anything about this? I keep searching the archive and such, and am finding nothing. Will be trying to fish other green stuff shrimp out of the main tank... whatever this is, I'm sure I don't want it to spread.

I've never seen anything 'pulsating' on any of the shrimp/crawdads/crabs that I've had over the years.

Can you upload a picture?

I'm trying, but the best I've managed so far is a small blur. They also live in my plant farm tank (they make for good pest snail population control), so they can be a bit hard to find. I'm going to try again at feeding time tomorrow, maybe they'll be more cooperative... it is right behind the khaki colored bit I'm assuming is the stomack, and pale green. The one of the shrimp in isolation, the green area has tiny blackish flecks on it. Here's to hoping I can get a pic tomorrow I suppose...
