Please offer me advice on gravid glass shrimp.

Post by Rodeo »

Hopefully someone will be able to avise me on what is occurring in my tank, I have a comunal tank but have always had shrimp of one kind or another.

Tank residents:-

1 x Plec (Splat) 15 to 16 inch long
9 x leopard danios
5 x Ruddy nose tetras
2 x coolie loaches (hardly ever see them)
1 x Blue Armoured shrimp
2 x Bamboo shrimp
2 x female Glass/amano shrimp
4 x male glass/amano shrimp.

Now one of the female glassies i have had for 3 years so she is getting on in shrimp terms the other female is relatively new as are the male glassies, I have had the males for about a month and not long after getting them i took the picture below of one of the males piggy backing my old girl (below the bamboozal) i presumed they were matiing and have been keeping an eye on her and her female friend since then.

well the wife noticed today that the male glass shrimp (shrimp or shrimps? ) were going loopy in the tank..... whizzing about at a very fast rate and then touching the females then whiizzing off again all over the tank in a frenzy, all i can think is that the females are dropping the babies and i the separated the females to a net breeder within the main tank (hopefully they will stay in there.

Any advice on what is happening would be appreciated I was hoping that the babies would thrive in the main tank in the net till they were big enough to join the others.

Well...I hate to disappoint you, but:

1.) The two shrimp piggybacking in the picture are amanos, not glass shrimp.

2.) Amano shrimp larvae are planktonic and need saltwater to reach maturity, so will definately not survive or grow in a community tank.

3.) Shrimp mate belly to belly (I think - never seen mine mate, but have read this)

Maybe someone else with more glass shrimp experience can help you with breeding yours?

Yes, those are amano shrimp, Rodeo. You could have found that out with a quick look on the shrimp varieties pages. I highly recommend reading up on everything you can on this website (including species descriptions, articles and forum search results) before making further posts. Otherwise you'll be violating a whole bunch of rules (and the rules are taken very seriously here, so I recommend reading them again). We are glad to help here, but it is expected that new posters do their own thorough research first.

Firstly i am totally aware that they are amano shrimp if you look closely at my description of my tank residents you will see that i called them Glass/amano shrimp !!

If you treat all new posters/NOOBIES with the attitude you have treated me then i would be surprised if this obviously well run forum would get many new people interested in pursuing shrimp as a hobby

I have spent hours reading up on the rules and on the postings in this forum and was surprised when the second reply i recieved was critiscising me in this manner.

Please be assured that i will no longer post on this forum due to your obvious "ATTITUDE" towards new members.

My thanks go out to Lady Friesian for answering my query in the proper manner.

Thanks for my short stay.

If you had spent hours "reading" you would know that the amano shrimp need saltwater for their larvae to survive. They won't just grow up in a net inside a freshwater aquarium. (Strange that "amano shrimp" was not in his post the first time around, but "magically" appeared shortly afterward...maybe I should get rid of the edit function for new posters...).

This happens all the time...you tell people to read up on things because they *obviously* haven't, and they get offended and start criticizing everything left and right....go figure. Banned, thread closed.
