Crab-shrimp interaction?

Post by theshrimp_123 »

I have 2 red claw crabs. Will they get along with shrimp. They have already had a minor sqaubble with a wood shrimp, but i see no major agression. What do you think? Also is the red crab an amphibious species? Is it brackish?

I would suggest against that, as the crabs will certainly consume any shrimp immobilized during molting if unable to capture normally mobile specimens. In a previous thread, you mentioned obtaining a crayfish from Petco: is this the facility from which you obtained the crabs? From personal experience, I would strongly discourage the purchase of crabs from such a source, as, almost invariably, their husbandry needs are never satisfied. Red-claw crabs, while they may outwardly thrive in full freshwater, do infinitely better in low-brackish conditions, and truly benefit from routine access above the waterline. If crabs are kept fully submersed in freshwater, it is almost certain that they will succumb to "creeping disease", characterized by a rapid deterioration of general health (namely, reduced feeding response, dramatic lethargy, limb loss, and lingering death); that is, if molting/growth complications or conspecific aggression do not kill them first. A healthy crab should actively move about and forage for food; be wary of "normal" specimens taken from tanks of dead or inactive crabs. In addition, crabs may introduce and are susceptible to a broad range of freshwater crustacean viral and parasitic ailments, many transmissible to shrimp.

That being said, red-claw crabs can prove immensely endearing when properly maintained, as outlined in http://wrongcrowd.com/aquaria/crab/.

REd crabs may hurt yr shrimps as crabs are usually aggressive when they are hungry . If you really have no second option try to feed yr crabs to the max so that they won't hurt yr shrimp
