Green Saddle/Eggs in Red Cherry Shrimp

Post by 48willys »

When I noticed the different colors of saddles and eggs of my RCS I did a lot of research here. The results seemed to suggest that shrimp with green eggs were inferior and as a result I removed all berried females with green eggs to a seperate tank. That was 8 months ago. Now I can see some results. The shrimp I removed (was going to use them to clean plants) with the green eggs are bigger, redder and more proficient than my original colony. My original colony has not thrived as I had hoped (Mustafa I did the research and that is not my question).

My question is...why is all info about green eggs in RCS differing from the results I am seeing. I am going to put all the shrimp back together, wait a another 6 months and then take the redist, largest adults and try a new colony.

"Redder" is a relative word that depends on environmental conditions and the perception of the individual observing. If you have some pictures, post them and we'll go from there. Fact is that the original red cherry shrimp that began circulating in 2003 all had yellow eggs (my colony is from that time). Another fact is that that red shrimp that occur down line from crosses between wild Neocaridina spp. and red cherry shrimp tend to carry green or greenish eggs.
