What is yr favourite shrimp and why?

For me .. i enjoyed yamato and rainbow shrimps the most... they may be considered as "little" in market but its a joy for me to watch them "eating" They are usually so cheap and i can buy 50 at 1 go... They are not colourful but they are active which is the vital part...

I love both Tiger and Cherry because :

(1) Tiger looks nice and funny
(2) Cherry is easy to breed

my personal fave is the crystal red, altho i've never owned any. i like them cuz of the red and white stripes. unfortunately, they're very hard to get where i am. i personally raise yamato and tiger shrimp... no luck with breeding yet tho.

the other shrimp i've seen in the lfs are cherries, rainbows, ghost, and woodshrimp... and unlike Asian markets where shrimp are cheap, the crits are rather expensive here in the states. 50 of them would cost at a minimum $100US.

Right now, my favorite is the cherry since it is the only one I have and that I have researched thoroughly. Though, if I have luck with cherries I would also like to get some tiger shrimp.

Without a doubt, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, the giant freshwater prawn:

The aggression and personability of the larger Macrobrachium sp. bring them the closest to true "pet" status amongst all shrimp; an endearing character on par with that of the more belligerent cichlids.

The following quotes [from http://www.aqua-addiction.com/forums/in ... topic=5395] provide some insight into their appeal - founded on the same traits for which they are reviled by others.

They are totally awesome BUT they will catch and eat any fish too slow to make it (we called our tank the Darwin tank for a good reason) and they will occasionally destroy a plant just because they feel like it.
They also do really cool things like pick the best spot in the tank for thier house and drag anachris plants into it for wall to wall carpet. That was neat! We fed ours algaetabs and shrimp pellets and he warred with our little red crabs to no end it was funny! Gosh I kinda miss him too.
They get about 8 inches at least (thats how big ours was.)

i was the proud owner of "Louie" [depicted above] i had to give him to a friend of mine because he more than outgrew my 30 gallon tank. i would recommend keeping it alone. unless you want it to kill everything. i had a 10" florida gar in the tank momentarily until i got my 55 gallon setup. it was for a very short time. two days later the gar was lobster [prawn] food. he also ate a pleco, two snails, and my rafael cat. his normal diet was feeders and he loved shrimp pellets. Louie was definitely an awsome shrimp though. i gave him to my buddy to put in his 75g, and on my birthday Louie died :( . he was about 14" of body and about 8" of claw, by far the coolest aquatic pet that i have ever owned.
