My boyfriend bought me a "fan tail" shrimp (I think that was the name??); one with little fan like fingers that catches food with them. Anyways, he put him in our tank to surprise me but before I even got to meet him, he's gone missing. He is in a semi aggressive tank and was about 3-4 inches long from what my boyfriend told me. The petstore owner told us he would be just fine with the types of fish in the tank, especially because he's bigger than every one else. There are lots of hiding places in our tank. Many large lava rocks and sunken drift wood.
Do they spend a lot of time hiding, or should be stop looking and assume he was someones lunch?

It's a *flower shrimp.

If the water is nice and clean (i.e. nitrates close to 0 or, better, 0) and they are not being bothered by fish they will sit somewhere and filter the water flow, provided you actually have some flow in your tank. Otherwise they will run around and "comb" the ground for edibles. Hiding shrimp are never a good sign.

Just wondering, did you ever find him? Mine can hide pretty good if they want to but rarely do because they rule the tank. Only tank mates are otos, L134s and galaxy rasboras, neither of which could hurt them. I had mine for almost 8 years.
