Clean the Java Moss

Post by beckypyyeung »

Days ago I bought four tiger shrimps (bigger ones) and sent them to the tank (10 gallons). I sent them there with a wish that they would clean the Java Moss. They're living with Cardinal Tetra and small Corys. They live happily. However, they've never approached the Java Moss, but spend all their time either on the filter or the substrate. Should I send more tigers there and hopefully some of them would be willing to clean Java Moss ?

By the way, Mustafa, shrimps from non-bag packaging really do much much better. This time they were from a tank instead of a bag.

Additional information :

Tigers in a tank are 2.5 to 6 times more expensive than those in a bag here in Hong Kong, but the death rate is much lower. Therefore, now I know I should not buy shrimps in a bag again.

About two weeks ago I bought a bag of 10 and now there are only two survivors. Fortunately, they're doing well with a pair of cherries in my breeding tank hung inside a 10-gallon tank.

By the way, will shrimps reproduce in such a small breeding tank ?

They will reproduce as long as you keep keep the water paramaters in good shape. :)

In fact, I've never tested the parameters because I feel the steps are like laboratory tests, which I think a bit too complicated. The water of my fish tank is always crystal clear. I just change about one fifth of water once a week, clean the filter once a month. New water is placed by the window sill under sunshine overnight. There had been charcoal inside the filter. When I started to keep shrimps and when the shrimps died one by one initially, I tried my best to look for information and concluded that they couldn't tolerate amonia. Then I put a small sachet of amonia killer inside the filter and all the fish and shrimps are doing well now. I guess the water condition is alright as there is no death recently and their appetite is good.

I put some water grass by the window sill, algae grows all over the leaves. Then I give my shrimps a treat of algae-grass about twice a week. They eat up the algae quickly, usually within the same day. Then I put the no-algae grass back to the window sill and then wait for new algae. That's what I'm doing. I guess it's similar to human beings who eat vegetable. I usually feed them with fish food. The day when I give them a treat of algae-grass, I don't give them fish food. I do that in order to give their digestive system a break (I believe it can give them a break). There is no scienific proof that can support this kind of diet. I just try and feel.

And they poop a lot every time after they've eaten algae. Therefore, I have reason to believe that algae helps to clean their digestive system.
