Baby shrimp?

Post by louieknucks »

I recieved my shrimp from Mustafa about a week ago and I recieved some hitchhikers with my cherry shrimp. I know Mustafa told me they are other crustaceans but I was curious what they were exactly. I don't have a camera but they look kind of like fish fry. You can notice their heads and the tail is transparent. They have grown considerably in size in just one week of having them. Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm...maybe I have a solution for you. I did have some Heterandria formosa in there who were breeding (I just took them out since they were decimating my shrimp hatchlings quite a bit). So, what you have there might be an H. formosa fry if it really looks like a fish. I totally forgot that I had those guys in there.

well I guess that it makes more sense given the look to them. I have about 20 of them or so. Any pics you can post so I can compare?

Hmm...now I am doubting that you have H. formosa fry. There is no way that 20 of them made it out of my tanks undetected. There weren't even that many H. formosa in there.

I don't have any pics for you, but fish fry just look like...well....miniature fish (complete with fins, two eyes, mouth etc.).

Wait and see if these things that came along grow at all and then become recognizable to you. If not, then they are (as I said originally) small crustaceans (either copepods, ostracods or similar).

I'm thinking now that they may be white cloud fry. It just so happened that I took some out right before I got the shrimp. I did notice that the female was noticably skinnier when I got rid of her as opposed to about a week prior. I'll let you know as they get older. I'll just sell them off to my LFS so I can keep a species only tank.
