"ecospheres"

Post by Monkanater »

i read the article about the Hawaii red shrimp or super shrimp, i remember seeing one of things in a shop at hawaii and a little one no bigger than my fist was about $20.00 then a huge one about the size of my 36" t.v. was about $1000.00 iam thinking how the did they get it in here with out it breaking? the glass was dangeresly thin. any way i was wondering maybe u could just get a glass cutter of some kind and cut the top off could u not...? i mean water might spill out but then u couldsave the srimp and u will have very "happy" shrimp. i was wondering how can u tell if a shrimp is happy or not?????

A shrimp is "happy" when it is picking at things to feed itself and growing and reproducing. You do see shrimp pick at food in those ecco-sphers, but they do not grow or reprodce.

Hello,

Once I had an ecosphere. I broke it and put the shrimp in a fishbowl. I fed them crushed flake food and they lived for a year. Was this detrimental?

Any type of self contained environment that doesn't allow a proper exchange of oxygen and water change causes me some concern. Also, most types of these kind of containers are not very large and don't offer the inhabitants a comfortable amount of space or potential for variety inside same. And we have to also be aware of supporting any type of pet shop "fad" that may end up being negative for the aquatic hobby.

Peace, Geo
