Ed Venn In Japan explained to me breeders there are breeding shrimp like crazy and culling out and reproducing the unusual ones. Here's a few pictures from auctions in Japan he sent me:

Those are not shrimp at all (nor crabs or crayfish), but rather freshwater anomurans (similar to hermit crabs and squat "lobsters") of the genus Aegla. They hail from South America, and are common in temperate rivers and lakes from Argentina to Uruguay. Many mistake them for crayfish, and are known as "Krabbenkrebse" or "half cancers" in Germany (such creatures are virtually unknown outside of the hobbyist cruxes of Europe and Japan, and have been termed "South American crayfish" [Parastacid crayfish are limited to the southern hook of the continent] in the scattered English-language hobbyist references I have uncovered). I've been yearning after some for a long time, but they are rarely imported to the U.S.

As richard says there are lots of new varieties of shrimp coming out of Japan. I currently raise cherry, bee, crystal red and S grade blacks as well as mystery crayfish (marbled crayfish).
I can't flog the cherries off here in Tokyo and they end up as feeders-I have 5 tanks full of them and they get my angels very excited.
The blacks go anywhere from ¥5,000 for 3-5 up to 10x that amount.
Koshiori-the one's with no butt end are going for ¥1,000-¥2,000ea the price has really gone down and I'm looking for some...
HELP!!! I've been swamped by messages! It's like a pack of great whites at a feeding frenzy! One would think you've never seen a Bee Shrimp or an Othello before.
So to answer everone's questions there are several colour varieties of Bee Shrimp
1) the wild variety with nondescript bands of brown and yellowish white
2) S(standard), B & A Grade wild banding and colours are more vivid and distinct
3) crystal red red and white nondescript bands and muddy colours
4) S(standard), B & A Grade Crystal Red banding and colours are more distinct and vivid
5) S(standard), B & A Grade Othello distinct black and white banding
Mustafa, the All Black version (must be a Kiwi rugby thing) are not available here in Japan, I'd like to get some of them. Ours are Black & White but, there are some varieties with more white than black on their bodies.
Prices vary from as low as ¥180ea for a common Bee Shrimp with poor to average colouring up to ¥21,000ea for a Championship Breed Othello–slightly cheaper for a Championship Breed Crystal Red[/img]

Those totally black bumblebees are only available in Germany as far as I know.
By the way (I totally forgot about this myself in all this excitement about new types of shrimp)...it is policy in this forum *NOT* to advertise shrimp for sale. Otherwise, this whole forum will turn into a marketplace, which I would like to prevent. This forum is solely for the exchange and acquisition of information about shrimp only.
It is ok if people PM each other and want to exchange shrimp, but no commercially motivated messages.
