endlers and shrimp

Post by cro117 »

hi, i am planing on purchessing some shrimp in the near future for my 20 gallon tank. i curently have some hybrid tiger endlers in this tank will they cause probles for the shrimp(most likely cherrys, tigers, red fronteds, and mayby bumble bees). i plan on using a on gallon mini tank that i will float in my 20 gallon for breeding porposes. will this be sufisiant for a clutch(what is the proper word?) of shrimp to grow until they can be released into the 20 gallon with the endlers? also, what is the general bio load rule for shrimp? thanks, cro.

I would recommend that you set up a separate tank for the shrimp. It's well worth it and not that expensive (10 gallon, air pump, sponge filter, lights). Your idea will probably not work out. The young shrimp are pretty sensitive. You might get lucky, but why risk it?

There is no bio-load rule for shrimp (and I don't believe in bio-load "rules" for fish either). The more shrimp you have, the more often you have to do water changes and clean your filter. I'd start with a small number of shrimp and let them reproduce. If you keep the feeding rations stable their numbers will first grow and then stay somewhat stable.

If you're not that intent on having lots of shrimp babies, you can keep them together. I had 5 cherries in a 10g tank with male endlers, and I ended up with about 25 baby shrimp. The tank is very heavily planted with floating java moss and floating riccia, with lots of places for baby shrimp to hide.

I since decided to give some of the shrimp their own 10g tank, so I can watch them more closely and enjoy seeing the babies.
