I thought I would share a current photo of my two desktop "tanks". The first is a 1/2 gallon glass hurricane jar from Target at $2.50, which has about 20 Opae. The second is a 1-1/4 gallon plastic pretzel jar which has about 40 Opae. I added fake plants and flora for visual appeal and increased surface area for biofilm. The Opae spend a good amount of time feeding on these plants. And there is lots of Mustafa's macro-algea stuffed in with the plants. There are also a good amount of Mustafa's snails and they are reproducing. The photo does not show it, but the Opae are very active and always out and about. Both tanks have been in existence for about a month or so.

I got my hurricane in the Target store. They also have a large one that looks to be over a gallon. The prices were not clear on the shelf and I thought it would ring up at about $12, based on shelf price tags. But it rang up at $2.50. (The jar itself just had a bar code and no price label.) When I just looked online, much of the online stuff was the same as on the Target shelf. But the hurricane was not online. Crate & Barrel also has these hurricanes and so does the pottery barn. I suspect I got a deal, and they would likely be found in the $12 range. I've also seen huge hurricanes at crate & Barrel for about $40. They looked to be around 3 gallon.
I was thinking of getting a 5 gallon aquarium to breed Opae. But I hesitate because I think the fun is in finding some artful glass and making it into an aquarium. And this is particularly suited to Opae because the glass does not have to accommodate a filter, heater or aquarium lamp. Once you find an artful container, you just need a desk lamp. So I am keeping an eye out for a nice large glass jar or vase. The fun is in the hunt.

Very nice Harry. Opae and small tanks are perfect together.

I'm usually a "keep it natural" type of guy, but I gotta say...those plastic plants look fantastic!
