new shrimp, not moving help

Post by narutoonepiece95123 »

Hi

I just got 17+ 1 opea ula shrimp from Mustafa yesterday. They arrived happy and well from what I could tell from the bag. I did notice that there was yarn inside the bag. I do not know why and for what purpose there was a small amount of yarn inside the bag. The shrimps were then moved in to a tank.

The tank has distill water and instant ocean salt and has been cycling for a week and a half. The smell was a bit rotten from the egg shells that were used for buffering. The tank also has lava rock for the ground and a large lava rock. I also brought the micro algae from the petshrimps store.

The shrimps were very happy as of last night exploring their new home. Most were white and not red. My question is why are the shrimps not moving ? Is it because there is not enough food? Or the problem might be because I did something wrong ?

I would appreciate your help on this matter thank you.

Hey Brian,

The best thing you can do for yourself and the shrimp is to ready everything in the "Supershrimp!" link above, and as many posts as possible in this forum. Pretty much everything you are asking can be answered by doing that. At this point just don't do anything. Just leave the shrimp alone. Your tank is not fully established/cycled yet, so the shrimp will be pale (they are not white) and they'll be hiding most of the time. Many forum users went through the exact same experience. Just read their forum posts/topics they started, including my answers to their questions. It can take several weeks to a month or two before everything settles in. Do not panic and start feeding for no reason..they don't need food and won't starve either. But you can quickly kill many of them by causing an ammonia spike by throwing food in there. Just leave the shrimp alone and do lots of reading here. That may take a few hours to a few days depending on how quickly you can assimilate the information.

The yarn in the bag is for the shrimp to hold on to. As opposed to fish, shrimp have legs and need to hold on to something.
