common names to sceintific

Post by honeyrobber »

I am brand new to the site. I did read several of the forums and even posted to one. Here is a little background on me. I raised tropical fish years ago. College, Marriage, and finally kids push my tanks out of the house(except the community tank and hospital tank). I now have 2 55 gallon tanks(one given to me and we are purchasing another next week) and a couple 10 gallon tanks. I still have my bath tubs in the woods at my dads farm for growing off fry during the summer. I have a couple cheap gold fish in the 55 right now getting it cycled. We are buying a few cichlids for the tank in the living room(hoping to raise them again). I have ordered some killifish(first time I was able to find them as the web is great).

I was told Ghost shrimp will not eat healthy eggs and are great for use in the hatching trays. What are these by sceintific name for buying them thruogh the fish store(they had a few different shrimp listed they can order for me but no common name)? Are there other shrimp that will not eat newly hatched fry? I will have liquidfry on hand as well as be feeding the fry newly hatched brine shrimp. I have plans on setting up one of the ten gallon tanks as the shrimp breeding tank. A killie web site gives a descent amount of info for keeping the shrimp going for use in the killie hatching trays. A couple of the people on the email list have them and say they raise easily but do not have any to part with as of now.

There are countless shrimp that are called ghosts. The most common are
Palaemonetes paludosus. These should be safe, as would other Palaemonetes species. Mine live happily with gourami fry.

There are some Macrobrachium species that are called ghosts. They are likely to eat the eggs, fry, and possible the parents.
Are there other shrimp that will not eat newly hatched fry?
Any of the algae-eaters from the Shrimp Varieties page would be fine.
