So now I've been bitten quite thoroughly by the h.rubra bug, I started reading up on the natural habitats of the shrimps to see if it was possible to do some sort of tank layout that would mimic the anchialine pools they live in.
On reading up I found this video taken in Kaloko-Honokohau National Park, of h.rubra in the wild, and it's rather beautiful.

Further reading suggests that the grass I see waving from the camera movement is widgeon grass - ruppia maritima, which makes a lot of sense, as it's normally an estuarine/bay grass, which means it would actually deal with the salinity in these pools quite well.
Gloriously lovely video of anchialine pool.

I'm wondering how we can get some of that plant material for our tanks.

I'm really glad Bruce Carlson took that video. If I am ever out to Hawaii, I will try to collect some of that brackish vegetation.
