How to get rid of ammonia?

Post by Iwantshrimp »

I was wondering how to get ammonia out of a supershrimp tank. I did an ammonia test today and it register as 0.25 ppt. I'm not sure that I would like to use chemicals as these are finicky shrimp that get killed easily by toxins. Should I change the water? It isn't all the way cycled yet and there isn't anything in it besides algae yet. Will the ammonia kill the algae or will the algae reduce the ammonia? Please help, and thanks! I plan to order shrimp and hermit crabs on May 15th but will wait if I have to. Thanks!

Just to be clear. There is nothing in the tank. No shrimp correct. The ammonia will not hurt the algae. It is how the cycle begins. Check ammonia each week and nitrites. Will keep you busy. It may take more than two weeks to complete the cycle. You are using a dechlorinator like Prime. When did you start the tank? You are using a simple sand substrate? If you run out of patience a 50% water change will not hurt. The bacteria responsible for cycling is not in the water it is on the surfaces. In an emergency Prime and water changes can be used to reduce ammonia and nitrites.

There are no shrimp, no crabs, no life besides algae inside the unicycled tank. I only started the tank a little while ago, like 15-23 days so it has a lot more time to cycle. I made the mistake of getting live sand instead I of regular sand, I believe that the bacteria died in the brackish water. My mistake. I have algae and eleocharis parvula (sea grass) in the tank that will probably take some of the ammonia out. I think... Thanks!

Remember patience. Invertebrates are sensitive. Two weeks, a month does not matter. Taking your time will lead to fewer problems.
