Snail reproduction vs shrimp overfeeding

Post by Andie_FI »

Question: I have a 5 gal tank already set up at low brackish that I am converting to a tank to breed the snails from here to feed 2 figure eight puffers in my 30 gal. Brackish tank. Wanted to use these snails so I could sneek some in the other and have them survive long enough for the puffers to have to hunt. So I would need them to breed rather prolifically, can I get that to happen and have Opaes in there too? Or would feeding requirements of one screw up the other?

You can breed Mustafa's snails in the brackish tank along with Opae. They are prolific breeders. They breed asexually, so it only takes one snail to breed and they are livebearers so there are no eggs to hatch. I would feed the Opae minimally and you will find that these snails can easily overtake your tank and provide for your puffers.

:( thank you for the reply I think I goofed or something though. Snails and algae got here on Thurs, snails were bebopping around their bag I do not have a refractometer just a floating salinity tester so I couldn't see where their salinity was vs my 1.008 so I dripped them as slowly as I could over multiple hours. They haven't come out of their shells again..can't tell if they are sitting there in shock or if it killed them. Checked all other tank parameters and everything is fine. Thinking I should have dripped a little let it sit for a day, repeat.

I usually leave them in a jar with the original water for 5 days or so. I continuously add small amounts of my tank water, so they will acclimate. But snails can survive harsh conditions for weeks or months. So I would just wait it out.
