Re: live rock
huh, ok. not even a small sponge filter in the corner?
Re: live rock
No need as they won't really benefit from a filter provided you don't overfeed or introduce them into an uncycled tank. Water movement often bothers them, and their oxygen requirements are so low that the regular gas exchange with the air above the water is all they need to thrive. Basically with these you have to throw out a lot of the rules you use for keeping shrimp of other species.jonesinfershrimp wrote:huh, ok. not even a small sponge filter in the corner?
I do think it helpful to get the macroalgae or another plant like those moss balls. It absorbs waste chemicals, produces oxygen, etc.
Re: live rock
I have the filter to house beneficial bacteria. Old habits lol.
Re: live rock
Course said bacteria exists in the water and on the substrate too, filters just give a lot of extra surface area for them to grow.Mech wrote:I have the filter to house beneficial bacteria. Old habits lol.

Re: live rock
ok, so how many pounds of lava rock should i get for a 20H?
Re: live rock
Just enough to create mounts/crevices for them to graze on and/or hide in safety. My 60cm/5.5Gal tank (refer my profile pic), I don't use a lot of lava rocks to create huge mounts. Just couple of palm-sized ones, and smaller ones of various sizes. There's breeding taking place in this tank.jonesinfershrimp wrote:ok, so how many pounds of lava rock should i get for a 20H?

Re: live rock

Re: live rock
That is more than enough. You do not need 2"-3" of substrate. A half inch would be more than enough. What color is the substrate?

Re: live rock
thanks Ken - its white. ill get a picture of it soon and post it in an update in my "my tanks" thread once my next piece to the puzzle comes in the mail >:)
Re: live rock
If you are doing the lava rock with that substrate it will look very striking. I am using black lava rock on white. On an earlier post someone was making little lava rock hills for a very small tank, and he glued his rocks together with gorilla glue. It works very well, but I pulled out my dremel and cleaned up the glue drips, and my opae'ula love it. For a 20H you might want to do a rock wall, which is what I am planning for my eventual 38gal tank. Once my population grows large enough.

Re: live rock
thanks Aenne, theyre going into my 40 breeder instead oh the 20H. i had a whole different idea for breeding ghost shrimp and what not with the 40 till they attacked and ate one of my guppies. but now im just gona put opaes in the 40 and leave the ghosts in the 10 they are in. as far as scaping it, i might do like a couple small hills with a larger mountain.
