shrimps and dwarf puffers???

Post by Shroitaka »

hi,
does anyone here keep shrimps and dwarf puffers, in the same tank? i am thinking of introducing each puffer individually to my shrimp tank so that each would feel uncomfortable around so many shrimps that they are afraid of them and will not attack any. If that doesn't work then i'll take them out (i'll be watching them closely). I have read a few posts that said shrimps can be kept with dwarf puffers.

I only want to hear from u IF u are in fact keeping DP and shrimps. I DON'T want to hear from u if u are only keeping shrimps and not the puffers (because then you are only telling me your opinion, about what you think would happen, and not your actual experience).

i'll keep u posted on how my operation will turn out toward the end. this will take me about a month because i just bought the puffers and i am in the process of getting them to eat freezed dried food. The other reason is because a cherry shrimp that i just bought is carrying eggs and i want them all to live.

i have keeped dwarf puffers before, and, though they are all diferent, they generaly will harass shrimp to death. also from my experiance i noticed that they do enjoy the company of their own species but are also wary of them, always keeping a cautious eye out for fin nipping. it would probubly be better to introduce them toghether so that they are distracted with the individuals of their own spicies, but the best idea is to keep them seperate. they will harass the shrimp.

I have a pea puffer in my 15G planted tank, with feeder shrimps, which we call Opae, but not the opae ulas. The pea puffer was looking at them as a meal, but the shrimps are just his size or alittle bigger and he had no chance at them, so he leaves them alone, but noe the SAE's, because I know they'll take a chance at them :( . So wneh I'm ready to redo the scape (soon), I'm gonna get rid of them, because they seem not to be doing a great job.
I would also highly recommend that the shrimps are the same size as the pea puffer, you do mean pea puffers, right! . If not I would not recommend it, sooner or later the shrimp population could dwindle. I hope this can help you.

here is a link for a dwarf puffer fish fourum with some topics relaing to dwarfs and shrimp. http://dwarfpuffers.com/forum/viewforum ... 5c6059685e

it seems that many on this sight have keeped them toghether sucesfully. i have keeped 4 dwarf puffers with 15 'ghosts' in a well planted 20 gallon tank and even them they harassed the ghost. read the fourums, do some research, and then make your choice. i still think it's a bad idea though.

once i kept a mini puffer and cherry shrimps together...
they are comfortable at first.
1 wk passed...they were happy....
2nd wk passed....shrimp populations started to decline..!!!
4th wk..one puffer and zero shrimps..lolx
Lesson learnt.
Never mix them together..hee

I've been keeping amanos in a tank with DPs for about 9 months, without any shrimp casualties.

Some DPs are more tolerant than others, from what I hear. I got the amanos soon after I got my (very small) puffers, so they kind of grew up together. Actually, the amanos are bigger than the puffers now.

I did "test" my puffers with ghost shrimp before adding the amanos.

I've had dwarfpuffers since June. Originally, I'd put a couple full grown non-red Red Cherries in there and those got eat overnight. Then I tried ghosts since they're bigger and they lasted until they molted when they got eaten. Then, I put one Amano in one of the dp tanks; it did okay for a few months but then one day just disappeared--don't know if it got eaten or if it decided to exit the tank (no bodies so far) or if it died for some other reason and I just never found it in the tank because of all the stuff in there. The tanks have LOTs planted (both potted and floating) with lots of driftwood and pots and rocks and javamoss and placed to hide. So, for me, no more shrimp swimming with the sharks--I mean, dwarfpuffers. I like the shrimp too much to have them eaten when there are other things to serve as fish food.

In a 30 gallon tank I had 3 half grown dwarf puffers and 3 adult Ammano shrimp. They did ok for a week then one day the shrimp were gone and the puffers were fat.

My dwarf puffers get along just fine with my ghost shrimps. They stay out of each other's way. My puffers are very well behaved, had them in the Cherry Red tank for a few months and they literally ignored the shrimps as well, I am lucky that they have good temperament.
