Do I have a problem? Don't see baby shrimp in tank #2

Post by Carolina »

Hi,
I am totally confused....
Both my tanks are reproducing non stop now... I have a 5 gallon (tank #1) and a 10 gallon (tank #2).
At any time, I have at least 2 berried females in each tank, and plenty of Larvae floating around.
On tank #1, I can see the babies once they can come out of hiding... However on tank #2 I never see them after the larval stage.
No bodies floating, no deaths I can account for.... They just seem to disappear.
I am starting to think they are all dying and I can't find them? At the same time, things appear to be ok, as the larvae are definitely surviving and the mommas continue to reproduce normally.
Should I be worried here?
I do have plenty of hiding space, but so does tank #1.... It's just so odd!

You may just not be looking hard enough/they are simply too good at hiding, even when I've had dozens of newly metamorphosed babies only a few were ever visible at a time (until they started to get bigger).

I would assume the bigger the tank the easier it is for the babies to hide.

How long has it been since the initial larva in tank #2 metamorphosed/disappeared? I'd give it a couple months before jumping to conclusions about the babies. If it has been that long then I am not sure what to say, it would indeed be a mystery. :?

What I have found is that newly metamorphosed shrimp stay visible for a couple days then they seem to disappear for a few weeks. After that they act like adults and are stay in the open.

I understand them hiding for a while... I get that. What I am saying is that they seem to be hiding forever.
In tank number 1 I can see the little ones when they come out from hiding, and follow their development.
Thank number 2 I only see them up to the point they get bentic.

Different tanks have different conditions. They may indeed be hiding longer in the second tank and only come out when they have gained quite a bit of size. In many tanks I went from 30 shrimp to 1000+ and I honestly didn't observe all that many small shrimp...it was almost like "magic". In others small shrimp are visible all the time. I'd wait and see if your shrimp population increases. In any case...waiting is never a bad idea. ;)
