Today, I heard a strange clicking noise coming from one of my shrimp tanks. The tank holds Minami numa ebi, Neocaradina denticulata. Have you ever encountered this before?

Nope, just the shrimp and some of Sze Wei's swordplants, the offspring thereof and some Heterandria formosa.
I've never heard of swordplants clicking–unless it was the one on the Little Shop of Horrors–which sang I believe... And the Heterandria are also quite mute.

Thought of that! Noise comes and goes and matches activity with the shrimp. They get excited and there's noise. Maybe my shrimp are atypical! "Hentai ebi"
Just a thought but do you have a submersible heater? Is it in good condition? I guess I am wondering if it is electrical pops... I had a heater going bad one time that did that - caused a mild current in the tank. I didn't lose anything but....

I do use submersible heaters but, that tank isn't heated. The Heterandria and the shrimp do well enough without any heat as does a tank of feral Xiph maculatus that I caught at Toneri Park.
In fact Japan is almost as bad as Singapore, I hear you have flowerhorns, piranha and plecos as well as other escaped fish sharing the reservoir.
