I have to say a big thank you to everyone here, especially Mustafa. Not only did the babies from the first round survive, just today I got a new batch I fed them for the first time in months last week and it brought my son and me such joy to watch them fight over the tiny shrimp pellet (I know we're not supposed to feed them while there are berried females in the tank but honestly I'd forgotten about her since she hung out inside the volcanic rock "cave". It was hilarious when she came out and shooed everyone else away from the pellet. I was a little concerned that she'd drop her eggs prematurely but these little shrimp are tough! It seems like most of the eggs made it from the number of new babies I saw today.
That's the first I've heard of not feeding while a shrimp is berried, and its never effected my females so I don't think its necessarily a rule. Actually doing a feeding has proven one of the better ways to find out if I have any berried females at a given time, as its the only time the majority of the tank's population comes out.
