asian red stripe

Post by imprtgrlracr »

i recently got a shrimp from my local pet store that called the shrimp an asian red stripe...does anyone know what kind of species this shrimp is? I looked at the varieties on this website and did a search on the web, but can't find any info on it. The shrimp is mostly clear with very thin striping that looks more black than red. It is a bit larger than the amano and doesn't eat much algae. Any info would help. Thanks!

The reasons are very simple and obvious why once in a while people might not get any replies.

1. it's almost impossible to identify shrimp just by verbal description. It's difficult enough to identify shrimp species based on pictures alone.

2. with so many posts around here I can barely find the time to reply to every single message out there (like I used to with fewer members in the forum)

3. There just aren't all that many "shrimp experts" around to find an answer to every question. Before I put up this website there were pretty much *NONE* in the United States. This situation has changed somewhat thanks to the information I have provided on this website and in this forum. You'll find this information disseminated all over the internet now. The point is...people who can answer questions about shrimp have to learn a lot themselves first before they can go ahead and help you (as I will always continue learning and sharing new information on this website). I can't possibly do all of this by myself as much as I want to.

4. There is no "right" to a reply in any forum. Forums are not helpdesks with paid workers who are paid for their time to solve people's problems. It's all on a voluntary basis, so demanding a reply will achieve the opposite of what you are trying to achieve. Nevermind the fact that it can rude to *demand* replies. Chances are that people just don't know what you are talking about if there aren't any replies or they have just not gotten to it yet.

Having said that, this is one of the rare cases where I can actually give you an educated guess as to what you might have, only because I know most shrimp varieties that are imported to the US (and Europe and Japan).

Your shrimp is most likely an Indian Palaemonid shrimp which has not been scientifically identified yet and which has no real common name. If two of the antenae of your shrimp are black, then I am pretty much certain that it's the shrimp I am thinking of.

Mustafa,

Thanks for clearing things up, but in response to each one of your comments:

1) I realize it is difficult to identify a species with a vague description...my main question was if anyone had heard of that name, since I was unable to find it anywhere on the internet, and I gave a general description of the appearence to go along with the name.

2) I wasn't asking for a response from YOU, I was asking anyone who may have heard of this species.

3) I know there aren't that many "shrimp experts" and that is why I have tried to find out what type of species the shrimp is on my own before I asked anyone for help.

4) I don't feel that I was "demanding" a reply to my message. I saw that the post had been looked at several times and was unsure as to why no one was responding. Because I am new to this hobby, I didn't know if I was asking a dumb question or if it was that no one knew. I know that no one has to reply to my questions and that there are no paid workers to solve a problem. I know how a forum works I just didn't know if there was an odd question I was asking.

I didn't mean to come off as being rude  I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

On another note, I think your website and forum is very informative. I appreciate all the info that you have made readily available. I have learned a lot and will continue to learn more through the forum reading people's posts.

I'm not sure if the shrimp I have has black antenae, I'll have to double check. I'll try to get a picture, but I'm having trouble getting a close enough shot that doesn't get out of focus....what type of cameras do you guys use?

It's all good. :) Not a problem at all. I was just clarifying things generally for everyone, not necessarily just for you.

As for taking pictures, you need to turn on the "macro" function of your camera...that way you can get closer to take a picture. If you don't have a macro function, you can hold a magnifying glass or any other magnifying lens in front of your camera lens to be able to get closer.

Take care,
Mustafa
