New tank - frantic and pale opae ula

Post by Bee »

Hello! I'm a new member here but I've have been lurking around this forum for a while now :smt006 I decided to post for the first time because I'm hoping someone can help me out with a new tank issue!

I started researching about opae ula many months ago before I finally went ahead a purchased a small little jar of them from a local breeder recently. The jar was all set up by the breeder with substrate, decorations, and 4 little shrimp. However, I don't believe the jar has been cycled as the jar was newly setup just a few days before it was given to me :( After I received the jar, all seemed okay for the first 2-3 days. My shrimp were initially pinkish and calm, which I believe is a good sign? This changed about 3-4 days later, as the shrimp became pale/white and most of them have been swimming around somewhat frantically since. I've had them for over a week now and they've been mostly pale/frantic for 4-5 days, only stopping for short amounts of time. I'm beginning to really worry, as I read that both pale and swimming frantically are signs of stress. I was hoping they'd settle down on their own but I also don't want to risk losing any of them. Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do in this situation? Is there anything that I should do or is it best to wait it out?

Currently, all I've been doing is making sure that I leave the light on for at least 8-9 hours a day.

Thanks so much!

How frantically?
Sometimes my shrimps active swimming around sometimes they just grazing on the sand picking food or just hang out doing nothing in the cave, but they are ok. If thwy swim upside down very fast maybe I should be worried but thwy just swimming around cheerfully.

Don't do anything yet, because they may be okay (probably not happy if the jar didn't have a chance to cycle, but okay). If you notice them struggling to get up from the substrate, then do a 80% water change immediately. The jar is going through the cycling process in the meantime, so ammonia spike is inevitable. Also, don't feed them. How big is the jar?
