I've got 5 tiger shrimp and I've had them for about a month. This morning one of them was carrying eggs. She's got 10-15 dark eggs and she is constantly moving them around as if she was cleaning them. I've never had "pregnant" shrimps before and I appreciate all the help I can get.
At the moment my 5 tiger shrimp are in a breeding cage (for livebearers) in my 55 gal aquarium. Tomorrow I'm going to set up a 2,5 gal plastic aquarium for them. Do I need an airpump or can I use oxygen tablets?
How long does it take before the female drops the eggs? And how long does it take before they hatch? Is there any way of telling if the eggs have been fertilized?
Hello !
you should put some small stones for the baby shrimp to hide in that small tank. Also a lot of flower will do fine.
You should use the airpump or leave it as is and put every second day some fresh water in, but shouldn't use oxyden tablets as shrimps are more sensitive then fish to a lot of chemicals.

congrats! i'd move the mother shrimp to a tank all her own. put in a sponge filter (aeration and biofilter all in one). add in some aquatic plants if u have them or leave it a bare bottom tank. set it up as soon as you can, allowing time to cycle the tank so there's no ammonia or other harmful compounds and so that microalgae can grow, creating a food source for the hatchlings.
the eggs will hatch in 3-5-weeks. at no point should the mother drop the eggs unless she is super stressed or if the eggs were not fertilized. u can move all the other tigers to the same tank if you wish. they will not cannibalize the young.
fish, of any variety, will eat the young as long as they are small enough to be eaten, so i'd keep them in a tank with fish at your own risk.
I'm new to the board, but I have 2 very shrimp with eggs, the other night I put them into a breeders net with lots of plants and I thought that the one was actually giving birth to her young because the eggs were moving around alot and I thought I saw little tiny white dots moving on her upper body. Was I just imaging this? She still has eggs? I just love these little guys - they are so much fun to watch!! -Debi

congrat!! may i know what's your tank temperature? thx.
Welcome fo the forum! Unless you see the female shrimp without eggs and tiny shrimp running around the "mass hatching" has not taken place yet. The female moves the eggs around to airate them and clean them.
